      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Elvis Costello's Orchestra</image:title>
<image:caption>Elvis Costello and his Orchestra - hammersmith Palais 1981 This photo has to be the largest group of people that we ever shot. It was originally used on the inner bag of the Trust LP in 1981, the Orchestra comprises of all the people who worked for Elvis at the time, plus the Guest Artistes on the Record, Glenn Tilbrook and Martin Belmont. You will recognize Nick Lowe playing Sax in the front row and the incomparable Cynthia Lole sitting next to Glenn. Barney Bubbles designed the Music Stands especially for this photo. It was taken at Hammersmith Palais as that was where EC had spent many hours watching his father, Ross, rehearse with the Joe Loss Orchestra. Instruments and Dinner Jackets were also rented for the occasion. Given the size of the place it took every strobe pack that we could get our hands on, twelve Balcar packs were spread out under the balcony, even with that amount of power, 28,800 Watts at full power, the exposure was only F5.6 (for photo nerds only). What was great about this shoot was that everyone did exactly what we asked and paid attention during the entire process. Given how hard it usually was just to get to get Bands to listen to instructions it was incredibly helpful that everyone did what we said. But, this was a special bunch of people who took the photo very seriously, and I thank them for that...</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Eric Clapton's Helicopter</image:title>
<image:caption>Eric Clapton Arrives at Blackbushe 1978 Here is a photograph that shows the level to which Rock Stars are pampered. It is taken Backstage at Blackbushe Airport at the Bob Dylan Concert. Dylan was quite happy to arrive in a coach with his Band, he enjoyed looking out if the window at the surrounding British countryside, but Eric Clapton had a different idea, he wanted to excerpt the minimum effort to get to the gig, and wanted it done in the shortest time possible. So a Helicopter was sent to his Country House where it landed in on his lawn. Eric walked the short distance from his house to the waiting Helicopter. After a journey of less than thirty minutes he arrived at the Gig, the Helicopter landed about 200 yards from the Backstage area, but to save him from any physical exertion and to keep him in the luxurious style he was used to a Rolls Royce was parked nearby. Eric then walked over to the waiting Rolls, got into the back seat, and was driven to his dressing room, a journey which took less than a minute to complete. How nice it must be to live inside a superstar bubble, to have everything at your disposal, to simply have to walk about twelve steps from Helicopter to Rolls Royce. But, to me, as well as documenting one of Rock's more surreal moments, it shows off the impeccable style of the British Roadie, just take a look at the guy's shorts, it's living proof of why Roadies often got more girls than the Band.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Elvis Presley's Star</image:title>
<image:caption>Elvis Presley's Star on Hollywood Blvd 1977 When this photo was taken in 1977 the US had just produced a worldwide phenomena, Star Wars, and I was in Los Angeles on the Thin Lizzy and Graham Parker Tour. I had seen Star Wars at a press screening in London earlier in the year, but, the chance to see it at the famed Gauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood was a something I was not going to miss. With a gig to go to in the evening I decided to attend the 12.00 showing, it had only just recently been released and the cinema was pretty full considering the time of day. Seeing Star Wars on this massive screen in such a legendary Theatre was a great experience, in fact I stayed for the next show and saw it a second time. Afterwards I wandered off to a comic bookstore to seek out some Star Wars material, I did not realize that I was walking down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, back then it was exactly that, a long line of legendary Actors and Actresses, then, lo and behold, I was standing at Elvis Presley's Star. He was of course well past his prime at this point in his career, but that afternoon standing by his star had quite an effect on me. He may have had his career ruined by entering the Army, or more likely by making too many bad films, but you can't deny his ability as a stage performer. The following year I was at a Ted Nugent Concert at Hammersmith Odeon, we heard the news that Elvis had died during the encore, I was going to visit with Phil Lynott after the gig and broke the news to him. Philip was deeply affected by hearing of Elvis's death, he went to his room and wrote King's Call. The NME put him on the cover the following week, just a photo, no words, there was nothing you could say really, other than the King was Dead...</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Dr Feelgood in Belfast</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr Feelgood in Belfast 1978 The Feelgood's were pretty much the NME house band back in the mid seventies, we would review them at any opportunity and I had become friends with them via Jake Riviera. They had an animal intensity about them, but also a purity, a raw, sexual, hard and intense kind of purity. Lee in his white suit doing the splits and jerking off with the microphone, Wilko machine gunning the audience with his guitar and zig zagging around the stage like a maniac, plus with Sparko on Bass and the Big Figure on drums they had a magnificent and stoic rhythm section. A couple of the most memorable gigs were actually parties, Led Zeppelin made the mistake of inviting them to play the post gig party they threw after the dates at Earls Court in 1975. Playing in quite a large room somewhere in the depth of that huge semi deco building that bands like the Zep's and Floyd somehow made intimate, the Feelgood's turned a lot of heads away from the bar, it was a short set but a lively one, I often wonder if the short set was because Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin's manager did not want people to forget the real reason people were there, to see Page and Co give an American sized show in the UK. Plant preening and Page with his Violin bow and laser was impressive up to a point, and eighteen thousand punters went home happy but it was the other four piece, the ones from Canvey Island I enjoyed the most, they played their hearts out, just like they always did. They also played the NME party in 1976 at Dingwalls, packed to the rafters they ripped the place up with their own brand of Rock and Roll. That night Ian Dury arrived with a razor blade on his earring, Punk was just around the corner. They also played the benefit to Save the Hope and Anchor, an awesome venue in North London, playing in a basement with sweat dripping off the ceiling, it was so crowded you could hardly breathe, they put in one of the best live shows I had ever seen. Thanks to Jake I often went to Feelgood's gigs when there was a spare seat in the bus or on the plane, one time we flew to France and came straight home in this little light aircraft, not even bothering to spend the night there. Despite knowing them so well I only shot them offstage the once, and sadly this was after Wilco had left the band. It was in Belfast, and I was not really prepared for the shock of seeing the true side of Northern Ireland. Nothing prepares you for Belfast in the 70's. You begin to realize it's going to be different at Heathrow, no carry on bags whatsoever, triple checks on your luggage which is then wrapped in a plastic bag. Then as you go to board the plane you see your luggage again, sitting on the tarmac ready for you to identify before its loaded into the hold. At Belfast Airport you see the Army everywhere, and that's how it is for the whole trip, no matter where you go the British Army is always just around the corner. You have a choice of places to stay, the most Bombed Hotel in Europe, or the second most Bombed Hotel in Europe. We chose the latter. On the way to the Soundcheck I asked if we could stop and take photos at one of the many fortified .pubs that we passed along the way. It was the Crescent Bar in Sandy Row which had been bombed in 1974, notice all the windows are bricked up and the cage covering the entrance so you can't firebomb it. This shows the grim reality of Belfast, the feeling of a city under the occupation of the British Army. The show went well, Irish audiences are always supportive but I reckon these people in Belfast were even more passionate than usual. The Hotel was located outside the city and on the way back our van was stopped by a patrol, a bunch of squaddies emerged and ordered us out of our vehicle. We were told to stand up against a wall, our legs were kicked apart and we were quickly searched as soldier pointed his machine gun directly at us. they went thru the van and then gruffly told us to be on our way. For once we had not been singled out because we were from the world of Rock and Roll, we were simply being treated like everyone else who lived there. It was a little scary, but it was enlightening, you now knew a little of what it was like to live in Belfast, nobody spoke in the van when we continued our journey, we just sat and reflected on the sad, harsh reality of Northern Ireland under British Rule.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Devo at the Berlin Wall</image:title>
<image:caption>Dev at the Brandenburg Gate 1978 I went over to Berlin to photograph Devo, we did all the normal photo shoot stuff in the afternoon before they had to go to the Soundcheck. But it still said nothing other than, here are a bunch of weird Americans from Akron, Ohio wearing yellow paper suits and funny hats. I did have a better idea, but it would take a lot of persuasion to achieve it. They had to leave for the airport at seven am, I suggested leaving an hour early and going to the Brandenburg Gate to do photos. Berlin was still a divided city and the Wall separated east from west. I ran it by Gerry, I ran it by Mark, once I had their votes the rest of the band agreed, and so off we went. When we reached the Wall it was completely deserted, the band changed into their outfits on the coach while I checked out the best position for photographs. Then the band quickly posed together for a few frames, but it still didn't say that much about the situation. I asked them to march back and forth in front of the gate a few times. It was to be my East German homage to Abbey Road. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted some Russians on top of the gate, with what I assumed were binoculars. Just as the band crossed for the third time the Russians stood up and I saw it was not binoculars they were carrying it was machine guns. Then a bunch of German came out of the loudspeakers, it scared the life out of us, in fact the frames are not level because I was seriously spooked by the situation. They scarpered quickly back to the bus, I joined them and in moments we were soon on our way out of the country, the adrenaline rush was pretty strong, but, I doubt if the whole thing lasted more than three minutes, machine guns have that effect on people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Boomtown Rats at Dachau</image:title>
<image:caption>Boomtown Rats - Dachau Concentration Camp 1978 Pretty much every Tuesday you could board the 9am British Airways flight to Munich and find it full of Bands going to do the German TV Show Rockpalast which was broadcast live each week. I went along for the ride as there was often a spare ticket to be had. I had known Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats since their first single, they opened for Thin Lizzy at Dalymount Park and Geldof was a frequent visitor to the house I shared with Phil Lynott. By this time they were very successful and would do pretty much anything for a Photo, we went out to the Olympic Park to shoot stuff, it's where the Israeli Athletes were shot and although interesting as a background it put us in a somber mood, when we were done I figured we should go out to Dachau and visit the Concentration Camp, we had plenty of time and I thought it was something we should all see. I had no intention of taking photographs, especially as Johnny Fingers only wore pajamas and its hardly the place for a shoot, but, when I saw the giant sculpture over the gates I felt so overwhelmed by it that I asked the Rats to stand under it to give it some scale, just look at the emancipated people portrayed in it and the sheer power of the work. Makes Rock and Roll seem so inconsequential really, don't you think...  </image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Beach Boys Sound Check</image:title>
<image:caption>The Beach Boys - Dorchester Hotel 1977 You could describe my life as pure luck, not in getting the picture each time, that part was relatively easy, but just in terms of who I got to see and the circumstances under which saw them. This photo definitely comes into that category. Back in the 70's the Record Companies were flush with cash and were happy spending it on themselves. CBS took this to the extreme with their Annual Conventions, these multi day events consisted of flying hundreds of Record Co Execs to some exotic location and then have their best Artists perform for them, Bruce Springsteen played the 1975 one in New Orleans. In 1977 they had it in London, on the morning of the first day Elvis Costello started busking on the street outside the Grosvenor Park Hotel, his hope was to get the attention of the CBS people, instead he became a person of interest to the Police and got arrested. Luckily he got out of jail in time to play Dingwalls later that night. The highlight of the Convention was a performance by the Beach Boys on the final night. I was pretty good at sneaking into places unnoticed and so, along with my friend Kevin, we slipped into the Ballroom via the service entrance in mid afternoon. I did not know if we would see anything but it was worth a try. We were hiding behind piles of stacked chairs when the place started to get quite active. Then, in front of out star struck eyes, out came the Beach Boys to do a Soundcheck. Better yet, Brian Wilson was with them, he had not bern seen in public or performed with them since his breakdown and in NME land this was scoop central. I stayed hidden for the first three numbers, behind Brian was his Doctor/Psychiatrist who would massage his shoulders between numbers, he also shouted out the words to the songs acting as a sort of full time prompter to the shell shocked looking Brian. Figuring that they might only do four songs I took my chance and darted out from my hiding place, I scurried to the front of the stage and took five very quick frames before running out of the Ballroom, thru the Hotel Lobby and out on to Park Lane. I had my photo and nobody was going to take it away from me. After developing it I noticed the two teacups on the floor in front of their feet. To me it really adds to the impact of the image by adding just a hint of the surreal to it. As I said I was really fucking lucky, I really did have the best job in the world...</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Paul Weller - The Face</image:title>
<image:caption>Paul Weller - The Face 1981 Whilst Terry Hall never appeared to smile, he was certainly not miserable, he just saw no need to smile, if you asked him to he did, albeit in a very minimalist fashion. The same was not true of Paul Weller. I remember this shoot well, it was a cover story for the Face, he was wearing a bright red vest, a clean white shirt, and his hair was a perfect copy of Stevie Marriott. You could certainly direct Paul, it did not do you much good however. All you got was the look, a stare that questioned his reason for being there, that this was part of the job, that you would never see below the surface. Being for the cover it needed to be good, I tried everything to get some kind of look on his face, every angle failed, nothing brought a smile to his face, nothing I said caused any change in him, the photo needed something and I told him so. Out of his pocket he produced a box of matches, he put one in his mouth and the picture somehow now had a life, he moved it around slightly between frames, as if it were an important prop. His face is exactly the same in all the pictures, the position of the match governs the choice, yet somehow there is something here, a flicker of interest in his eyes, but you have to look really hard to see past the persona he has always projected, that of Paul Weller, leader of the Jam, leader of the Style Council, and now the Godfather of Pop, I'm amazed he has lasted this long.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Peter Frampton's Press Conference</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Frampton's Press Conference - The Paparazzi Frampton Comes Alive, if ever there was phenomenon in the mid 70's then this was it. He was a cute blonde, formerly of Humble Pie, he took America by storm wearing a Baby Blue Satin Suit and by releasing a Live Double Album. Eventually of course he came back to the UK, and the chaos continued, his Photo Call attracted more photographers than I had ever seen assembled for a PopStar. It was a Zoo, there was no way of getting close, no chance of a decent picture, in fact I nearly went home thinking it was a pointless exercise. But, then I spotted a dark and dimly lit staircase, I ventured up it and found myself on a deserted balcony, the perfect place for pictures, of course he was small in the frame, and sitting next to his Manager, Dee Anthony, he certainly looked small. I got my picture, it was pretty good too, there he was, surrounded by photographers, and looking straight at me. The paper loved it and ran it big. People wondered how I did it, how could I get him to look right at me. It was easy, I just shouted "Peter, Up Here" at the top of my voice. Job done...</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - The Ramones - NME Cover</image:title>
<image:caption>The Ramones - New York 1977 In early 1977 Mick Farren and I went to New York to check out the Punk scene, we went to all the usual clubs like Max's Kansas City and CBGB's, and we met up with a number of bands including Blondie and the Talking Heads. But the main reason we were there was to do a cover story on the Ramones. Mick was old friends with Seymour Stein who owned Sire Records and he set us up with an interview and photo shoot. We met up at Joey Ramone's apartment on a Sunday afternoon and I proceeded to drag them outside for a shoot, I had found an alley just off the Bowery and to me this summed up the way New York was back then. The city had just declared itself bankrupt and was very different from the way it is today. The alley was full of garbage, old furniture, and homeless people. We walked to the far end where an old sofa he'd been dumped right there on the street. The Ramones did what they did best and posed in leather jackets and ripped jeans, the archetypal punk look. I gave little direction as we were accompanied by Arturo Vega, their Art Director. I told them where to stand, and he told them how to stand. It was not my normal way of working but they trusted him and it actually made my job easier. The pictures we did together were good, and that's all that mattered.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Absolute Beginners - Sleeve</image:title>
<image:caption>David Bowie - Absolute Beginners - London 1986 When Julian Temple made his film of Absolute Beginners he asked us to take photos of all the cast members and I spent a week on the movie set taking portraits of all the Actors. As well as appearing in the film David Bowie had written the title song and was going to make a video to promote it, the record ended up at Number Two on the Single Charts. The video was shot in a variety of locations around the Embankment of the Thames and although I had many great images from the video David and I felt that we should shoot a special photo for the cover. We set up our lights near the Houses of Parliament and waited for a break in the filming, but, not surprisingly they were running late and we ended up taking the photo just as Big Ben chimed midnight. Given the time restriction the photos were done very quickly, but, working with David is so easy that we only needed to shoot two rolls of film. On seeing the contact sheets there was one frame where he had this big smile, but his publicist told me that he would not approve it as he never smiled on his record covers. However, when we want thru the photos together David agreed that there was something special about this frame and agreed for it to be used. To this day it's the only time he ever smiled on a cover.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Absolute Beginners Contacts</image:title>
<image:caption>Absolute Beginners Contact Sheet 1986 David Bowie is one if the easiest people to work with, he's so good in front of the camera that you can do a record cover in a single roll of film. When you are on a film shoot nothing endears you to the Director more than the ability to shoot fast. Everything was pre-lit and tested beforehand, all it needed was for David to step into the frame and pose for three minutes. Contact sheets can tell you a lot about both photographer and sitter, the twelve frames on a roll is now a thing of the past but back then it was the order of the day. When you have to hand over the sheets to the publicist you never know what you will get back from the artist, sometimes with Rock Stars only a single frame from a dozen rolls is marked, sometimes they approve three or four, but that is not the case here. In the right hand strip you can see a small X, this was the choice of David's management, safe as houses, but also kind of boring. On the whole page you can see exactly the way David marked it up, excluding only two frames as a bad photo, ignoring seven more frames as they were OK but not great. Then he has circled three of the frames including 4C, the one where he is smiling. The Art Director then marked a square around that same photo. I was very happy David and the AD chose it, but this surprised everyone who worked for him as he has never, before or since, smiled on a record cover.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - The Clash on the Circle Line</image:title>
<image:caption>The Clash on the Circle Line 1977 On April 7th 1977 the first Clash LP was released. We put them on the cover of the NME to coincide with this pivotal moment in Rock history. Their manager, Bernie Rhodes, decided that to maintain maximum street credibility the photos and the interview should be done on the Circle Line. Tony Parsons and I were to meet the band at midday on the Baker Street platform. We started the interview but it was incredibly noisy. I took photos but the moving train was not the easiest place to work: the smoking car we were in was filthy and I was also worried about camera shake. In the end we used a close head shot photo for the cover, and this frame was never used. So for more than 35 years it has remained unseen, but I think it stands the test of time quite well. What comes across to me is just how young we all were back then, in 1977.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - David Byrne - Tryptych</image:title>
<image:caption>David Byrne - London 1981 I first came across the Talking Heads in 1977 on a trip to New York for the NME and photographed them there and again in London when they supported the Ramones at the Roundhouse. My old friend Tibor Kalman designed their record covers and we often spoke about David Byrne, his intelligence and the need to never disappoint him by doing anything ordinary. This photo was originally done for the Face in 1981 and as we had done many times we built a small studio in the basement gym in the Warner Brothers building on Broadwick Street. Down there we photographed people as diverse as Laurie Anderson, Bonnie Raitt and the Pretenders. David Byrne has such photogenic features, it's hard to take a bad photograph and we had just done a series where he pulled and distorted his face, something nobody else would ever agree to do, but for him just seemed natural. As he is a very tall and thin man I then asked him just to sit straight on to the camera. I took three successive images on the Hasselblad, altering the angle of the camera on the tripod between frames, shooting first his head, then his chest, and finally his hands resting in his lap. It seemed a perfect way to present him, the Face never used it so I'm showing it here for the first time. I always remember Brian Eno's observation, That it will be so great when Byrne and Bowie are really old, they can sit together on an island and still look cool. Of that I have no doubt.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Elvis in the Yellow Coat</image:title>
<image:caption>Elvis Costello Jumping 1986 If there is one thing Elvis Costello has in spades it's enthusiasm. No matter what it is he's doing he always puts his heart and soul into it. Around the time of King of America we did a studio session together, all went pretty normally, we shot close portraits, half lengths, photos with a guitar, all the usual stuff. I told him we had enough good photos and could call it a day, but he replied that he had one more thing he wanted to try. He disappeared into the dressing room and came out a few minutes later in this bright yellow coat. On many people it would look ridiculous, but Elvis has this ability to carry clothes well and it actually suited him. It did not seem to me that you could do anything other than full length shots in this outfit, he even had these black watch plaid shoes to top off the outfit. So I suggested he just jump up in the air a few times. He happily did this, doing his best Pete Townshend impersonations, but for the last couple of frames he flung his arms out wide creating the photo you see here. It appeared first in the Face, we always offered Nick Logan out best work and he ran this photo across a spread. To me it sums up EC perfectly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Dr Feelgood - Hope and Anchor</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr Feelgood at the Hope and Anchor Benefit 1977 There was an unwritten rule about photographing live gigs, No Flash. But, there were times when you had no choice, especially in Clubs, Elvis Costello at the El Mocambo was another one. The bands don't like it because the strobe can phase them when they are not expecting it, the punters don't like it because it destroys the ambience a bit. So I used to do it very rarely, and when I did I picked my moments carefully. I knew the Feelgoods really well so they did not mind me standing on the side of the stage, but at the Hope and Anchor the stage was tiny, and the Feelgood's were a big band by now and even in this tiny club they had a huge PA, just look at the size of the monitor wedges. I was literally a couple of feet from Sparko when I took this photo, I only ever took a few frames, and once I knew I had something great I stopped. I think this shot really sums up the energy of their live act, Wilco is on the other side of the stage so I was unable to see him, but it's nice to have a big close up of Sparko and Lee in action. They were one of the best live bands ever, and this night was the best show I ever saw them play.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Elvis Costello - Trust</image:title>
<image:caption>Elvis Costello - The Trust Sessions 1981 Elvis Costello was the first person I ever photographed in a Studio, it was March 1978. We did it at the same time as the two consecutive NME Cover stories, one with Nick Lowe, the other of him sitting on a bench. I never showed them to the paper, mainly because they were in color, but also because Studio Photography was not allowed yet, documentary, live, or while they were being interviewed was the norm back then. I set about changing that, but I had to wait until 1980 and the launch of the Face before anyone took me seriously, Pop Stars on White was simply not considered interesting, it was considered to be boring, the stuff for PR photos. But in 1979 Jake Riviera asked me to shoot EC in the Studio for Armed Forces, he had a vision of Elvis smoking, I had a vision of him standing with his guitar, his feet awkwardly bent, but in the end a painting of a Herd of Charging Elephants was used, Jake's smoking photo was put on ice, and the full length shot was printed 70 feet high above the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road. Trust was our next venture into the Studio, this time it was somber, dark hat, coat and suit, a cigarette in hand, it got proofed, but in the end it lost out to a frame from Barney Bubbles Video for New Lace Sleeves, a color shot of EC looking over his glasses, it became somewhat Iconic. The pose was something we came up with in the Studio, weeks before the video. That image had a Frank Sinatra vibe to it, his hand making the perfect wave, I loved it but it was not part of the brief, so it appears here for the first time. Next up was something that was the ultimate photographic honor, the chance to use the giant 20x24 Polaroid camera, that produced an instant print two feet high, there were only five of these cameras in the world. I called EC and asked him if he would sit for me, he eagerly agreed, the camera was incredibly slow to use, and you only got ten sheets of film, I shot nine frames, with only three decent photos, one of which appeared on the cover of the Face, the last frame however was something completely different. He looked away from the lens, I asked him to look down, wearing his black beret Jake joked that it was his Laurence Olivier pose, in retrospect that was quite a compliment. We shot more pictures to go with the Face story, but it was 1982 and from his bag he produced a blue sweater, and matching blue glasses. I documented it, but kept it hidden, if Jake had seen that I would be in trouble, no way would he want EC to be photographed in that outfit. I thought it was cute, but it remained under wraps for 32 years. In 1986 we worked again, around the time of King of America, as well as some Django Reinhardt looking ones, EC suddenly appeared in a bright yellow coat, and black watch tartan shoes, I made him jump up and down, jumping for joy was the Fleet Street name for it. In 1991 he teamed up with the Brodsky Quartet and I got to shoot him with Classical Musicians, they were about to go on tour, I warned the musicians of the perils to come. You are going to get screamed at, way more than the polite applause you get at Classical a concerts, it will change you forever, you will never be the same again, I was right. Although I had given up photographing people by the mid nineties, I did agree in 1996 to do one last session in New York, to promote North, his latest disc, I used a large format 4x5 camera this time, the results were simple, but stunning. I used my favorite trick, the black turtle neck sweater, cover up the neck, hide few pounds, it worked as advertised. I always had fun in the studio with him, he enjoyed dressing up, and throwing a few shapes for the camera, we never failed to produce good work, the chemistry between us had been there since the first time we met, it's still there now 35 years later. Being friends and shooting stars is the best way to work, I had similar chemistry with Phil Lynott and Pete Townshend, but I enjoyed working with Elvis the best of all...</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - David Byrne - The Face</image:title>
<image:caption>David Byrne - London 1981 There is something about David Byrne that makes you take good pictures, almost like you don't want to bother him with something that's not interesting, I worked with him a number of times, but the 30 minute session we did for an early issue of the Face was the most productive. It was shot in the basement of the Warner Bros building in Soho. There was a gym down there and quite often I built a little studio in the space, I did the Pretenders, Laurie Anderson, even Aha in that basement. We told David the ideas and he cooperated fully, we decided to shoot on black to emphasize his face, after all it's one of his most interesting features, we shot him distorting it, pulling the skin this way and that, ending up with the classic frame of him opening his eye, quite literally in fact. We also experimented with double exposures, combining profiles with straight on views, now you would do it in photoshop but back then it was all in camera. And also one set of pictures where I used three consecutive frames to shoot his body, to show his height, and to make something other than a simple 3/4 length photo shot the usual way. It's amazing what you can do in 30 minutes with the right person, David Bowie is someone else that inspires you to try anything, and to trust your judgement and forget any normal poses. I always remember Brian Eno's observation, That it will be so great when Byrne and Bowie are really old, they can sit together on an island and still look cool. Of that I have no doubt.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - David Gilmour - LP Cover</image:title>
<image:caption>David Gilmour - London 1983 When I received a call to see if I was interested in photographing David Gilmour I could not reply in the affirmative quickly enough. Not only that but it gave me the chance to work with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis fame. Storm was the one who inspired me to become a photographer, the sleeve for Atom Heart Mother featured a cow, no band photos at all, how cool was that. I fantasized about being the photographer, what a great way to earn a living, I was only 15 but my mind was made up, this is what I wanted to do. The chance to work with Storm and David 12 years later made that dream come true. The word came from on high, "Tell Chalkie to get a Water Cooler" but we don't have them in the UK so I told him no. He refused to budge, we got one from America, I asked why? He said I have got this Photo, trust me. We were booked into a white background studio, I could not fathom this water cooler bit, but, whatever he wants I'll do it. The Water Cooler arrives, we fill it with water, we wait three hours for Storm to show, I ask to see this picture, he hands it to me. It was James Dean, outside a store, leaning on a Water Cooler. He was radiating handsomeness. My heart dropped, David's not used to this studio photo stuff, no way can I turn him into James Dean instantly. And Storm wanted to start with this. But I was touched by the fact that he thought I could turn his friend into James Dean, that David could become James Dean. David is David, he's very special, but I could not possibly do that without teaching him how to act in front of the camera, not just be himself, and teaching him that would take a few hours. Storm starts ordering everyone around, barking orders at the crew, they get nervous moving the cooler and knock it over, the glass shatters, the studio gets flooded. I'm relieved and smile at David, he smiles back and opens a guitar case, out comes the Red Strat and he sits in this cheap plastic chair and entertains us for 45 minutes while they mop up the studio. Starr takes an SX70 Polaroid of him doing this, in my friend Scott Crolla's groovy shirt, then we realize he needs stubble, he's so clean-shaven that he lacks his look, he has none of that slight grubbiness he needs, so I tell Storm and we cancel the whole thing. Just one SX70 had been taken, thousands of pounds had been spent. We regroup in the Canteen at Abbey Road, figure out the growth time, then it came to the crunch, I had to persuade Storm not to come to the reshoot, he needed to trust us to do our work in private, our little portrait studio was in the garage of a Mews House, it was tiny. David came, Starr did his make up this time and nobody else but Storm's trusty Ambassador, Andrew Ellis was present, It features the difficult photographic technique of lighting from below, needed to cast a slight shadow up onto his cheek and to generally add a bit of drama, he's such an incredibly nice and handsome person that I felt we needed to make him a little tougher looking. We gave him my battered old leather jacket, put him on a chair and went in close on his face, he happened to move his arm quickly and his hand crossed his face and looked like he was thumbing a lift, Starr managed to catch this frame and ultimately it was used as the cover. She liked people smiling, I liked them moody, so the portrait you see here went on the inner bag and the happy one on the cover, after all David is a pretty happy kind of chap, so it fitted in well. It was also pretty cool to have his Electric Blue Porsche parked outside our crummy garage for the afternoon. One of the things that comes as a bonus when photographing guitarists is that you can ask them to bring a couple of instruments with them, it does two things, it gives them something to hold and covet in front of the camera, it also gives them something to do when backgrounds and lights are being changed. And they do what they do best, they play their guitar. It's a very privileged thing to hear them noodling about whilst they are waiting, and, you get to see some pretty amazing guitars too. Also worth mentioning is that when he reformed Pink Floyd seven years later with my dear friend Guy Pratt replacing Roger Waters on Bass, they Toured the US after a month of rehearsals in an empty Aircraft Hanger at Toronto Airport. Sitting in a pair of Directors chairs Storm and I watched the final night of rehearsals with the full Stage Show including Lasers, the band played a two hour set to an audience of less than ten people. To say it was a mind blowing experience would be understating things, the best bit was during the encore when they played Comfortably Numb, with it being the last night they took a chance and opened the Hanger doors just as David got to the guitar solo, the lasers projected out into the night sky creating an incredible light show, then, just as the song was finishing a Jumbo Jet went by and the Floyd's stage set was dwarfed by the size of this massive plane. The reason for the tiny audience was that in order to get to the gig you had to be driven across the runways at Toronto's Pearson Airport in a special vehicle, it had two huge flags sticking up from the roof in order to make it visible to the Pilots of all the Jets that were taking off and landing, obviously that's a highly restricted access route so it meant very few people other than the Band and Crew could get there...</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Sir George Martin and Sgt Pepper</image:title>
<image:caption>George Martin - Air Studios 1985 There are certain people in the Music Business who are genuine legends, those who help build the records we all love, people who know how to extract the very best performances out of the artists, they labour for months to make the very finest recordings, these people are the Record Producers. When George Martin phoned up I was truly honored, this was a man I had heard many stories about, my friend Chris Thomas had been his Engineer on the White Album, without George the Beatles may never have reached the heights that they did, he wanted his portrait taken, the prospect filled me with excitement and enthusiasm, especially as he is also an extremely handsome man. We arranged to take the photo at Air Studios where he said he would be working, it was a place we had been to many times, we often set mini studios up in the bathroom, or the relaxation area, or if available in the recording studios themselves. We showed up a little early so we could set up the mobile studio but he saw us thru the glass, he came out of the Control Room and told us that he was busy for the next 45 minutes, but, would we like to join him. There were two EMI Security Guards by the door and on the Mixing Desk was a two inch Master Tape, written in pencil on the box were these simple words. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper It turned out that he had to approve the first CD release of Sgt Pepper as it was twenty years since its release on LP and he wanted to listen to the master all the way thru just to be sure that it sounded OK, he played the tape, we sat mesmerized behind him. When it was over he rewound the tape a little to hear Day in the Life a second time. This time he pulled off everything except John's vocals, it was an eerie but incredible thing to hear, and brought a tear to our eyes listening to it. Once it was over we listened to all the backwards music at the end of the second side, in Studio Sound and with George sitting there it was like magic, one of the best and most privileged moments of my life. I'm not sure people realize that George produced a lot of Comedy and Novelty records before he worked with the Beatles, these are just a few... Rolf Harris - Sun Arise Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren - Goodness Gracious Me The Archers Theme Shirley Bassey - Goldfinger with Jimmy Page on Guitar Bernard Cribbins - Right Said Fred All the Goons recordings Millicent Martin - That Was the Week that Was Flanders and Swann - The London Omnibus And as if that was not enough he also produced Jeff Beck's groundbreaking album Blow by Blow.. Actually, there is one other story that is worth telling... In 1978 I got my first commission from Paul McCartney, it was to shoot his Xmas card at Abbey Road, a friend had just given me the Beatles Demos for Decca that were rejected, it was on the aptly named "Deccagone" Label. I figured it might be a laugh to play it during the shoot, I was fearless back then and after two Songs Paul look at me with a quizzical eye, "is this what I think it is?" He asked, I told him it was, " George" he shouted from the Studio Floor, George Martin appeared at the top of the stairs and Paul asked me to give him the Cassette, "Do me a favour and copy this will you" he instructed "and make sure Chalkie gets back his tape, it might be quite valuable"</image:caption>

<image:caption>John Cooper Clarke - The Kew Gardens Studio Of course if I had to nominate my favourite Mancunian from our generation, it would be John Cooper Clarke, we had built a Studio in the Garage at the house I shared in Kew with Phil Lynott, this was the beginning of the end of an era for me, once I had started Studio Photography I never left it, John was the inaugural Shoot, what can I tell you about it? Well he was just non stop funny, that wonderful deep Mancunian accent, the motor mouth delivery, total fun, he was awesome then and he is awesome now. Not only that but he looks just the same, birds nest hair and those piercing eyes, but the voice! How can you ever forget the voice! In fact, if i'm ever in need of cheering up I simply play "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" and my blues fly out of the (Studio) window...  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Brian Eno</image:title>
<image:caption>Brian Eno - Virgin Records 1978 The Clash - NME Cover 1976 The NME put the Clash on the cover for the first time in April 1977. I wanted to make sure it was something special, a photo people would remember. The Clash has their clothes made by Sebastian Conran, he had a sewing machine set up in a room next to Bernie Rhodes office at Rehearsal Rehearsals in Camden. Bernie felt the clothes were an important part of the Clash's image and they always had group shots done full length for maximum effect. But that fact bothered me, and it made me want to do something else, to shoot their heads, close up, and put that on the cover instead. I negotiated carefully with Bernie for this, placating him with lots of full length pictures shot outside first, and then I shot this photo against a white wall in his office. It was the first photo I had ever shot against white, it was what I had always wanted to do, ever since I saw the inside sleeve of Meddle back in 1971, it allowed you to isolate the subject against white, makes for nice and clean cover too. I had bought an inflatable soft box that attached to my flash gun, Tony Parsons held it above my head while I shot the variations. Yes, variations, the Clash were democratic, right, so I did a version with each band member facing the camera. This kept everyone happy although I knew all along it would look best with Paul in the centre, he was the handsome one, in fact I only showed the paper that version. All three variations were done on fourteen frames of film, mainly because the flash took so long to recharge, also because film was expensive. The result is one of my best covers, and the first one on white.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - The Ramones on the Bowery</image:title>
<image:caption>The Ramones - New York 1977 In April 1977 Mick Farren and I came to New York to check out the punk scene for the NME. We went to all the well known Clubs including CBGB's, Max's Kansas City, the Bottom Line, Danceteria and the Mudd Club. Joey Ramone lived close to CBGB'S which was on the Bowery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Initially we took photos on the roof of Joey's apartment building but although it looked like New York it did not really have the right feel. I had spotted this alley when walking over to Joey's place, it was a block from the Bowery and seemed perfect to me, it was full of trash and totally run down, back then huge parts of Manhattan were like this, the money had run out and the city was bankrupt. I dragged the four Ramones to the location, I did a number of group shots, aided by their Artistic Director the late Arturo Vega. It seemed odd having somebody else telling the band what to do, all they did was stand there in a line, but it made them relaxed so I was happy to let him help. To me this sums up the American Punk scene at that time, leather jackets, t shirts and jeans was the look they all had, it's a shame the Ramones never had the true success they deserved, but their influence should never be underestimated.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - David Bowie at Victoria Station</image:title>
<image:caption>David Bowie - Victoria Station 1976 This photo became the centerpiece of what came to be known as 'The Victoria Station Incident'. David Bowie hates flying, so when he returned to the UK for some concerts as the Thin White Duke in 1976 he arrived by a special train. It pulled into Victoria Station in the middle of a quiet Sunday afternoon, that's if you call a bunch of girls screaming at the top of their lungs quiet. He walked a few yards from the train carriage to a waiting open topped BMW which then whisked him to another platform where the car reversed towards the hordes of screaming girls. It stopped near us photographers, David stood up in the back of the car and waved to the crowd, then, he drove of to an undisclosed location. Unfortunately because of the gloomy late afternoon light at Victoria Station I used fill in flash on the four or five frames I managed to rattle off before he split. When I showed the image to the NME the following day they decided to enhance his left arm by drawing a hand on the image, because of the flash it was partly missing. But when we saw the paper on Wednesday it looked very much like he was giving a Nazi salute. The press picked up on this and put it together with some quotes on fascism he had made in Europe and lo and behold David was vilified as a Nazi. I feared it might harm our relationship but he shrugged it off saying it wasn't my fault, that I'd just caught a wrong moment and that he was indeed waving at the crowd. Nobody believed him of course and the Victoria Station Incident became part of a Bowie folklore.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Sid and Nancy</image:title>
<image:caption>Sid and Nancy - Cricklewood 1978 When I shared a house with Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy there were often musicians around, that veritable duo Cook and Jones from the Sex Pistols were frequent visitors. Sid and Nancy came over with them a couple of times, they did not behave like they did in public, they were well behaved and polite, they loved watching black and white Elvis Presley movies on Philip's video recorder, which was a rarity back then. Some nights we would go to bed whilst they were still watching the TV, I would go downstairs in the morning and they would be gone but the living room would be clean and tidy, they had even emptied the ashtrays, not exactly what you would expect them to do. They were always respectful to Philip although Sid was not really interested in getting tips from him on bass playing, one night I asked them to pose for pictures in our bathroom, they duly obliged and the photo appeared on the front page of the NME. To me they were a couple that were very much in love, and Nancy did everything she could for Sid, he was quite funny really and they never caused us any trouble, their end was tragic beyond words, but it fitted the legend that they had already carved out for themselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Pete's Broken Guitar</image:title>
<image:caption>The Who - Houston, Texas 1989 There are few things in this world that are worth more broken than when new, but Pete Townshend's Rickenbacker is one of them. It was their 25th Anniversary Tour of America and the band were going to put out a live album, they needed a sleeve and I wanted something better than the obligatory live photo. I had heard that Pete had recently smashed a guitar out of frustration, the damned thing would not stay in tune. But instead of making a big spectacle out of the act he did it offstage, leaning it up against a wall and whacking it with his foot, the guitar snapped in half and the body broke into three pieces. It seemed the perfect thing to shoot for the LP cover, We borrowed John Entwhistle's spider necklace and got one of Roger's beaten up microphones. We built a small studio in the dressing room, Starr styled the photo of the three objects and as we were finishing I knocked out a couple of frames of just the guitar. I think it sums Pete up quite well, and it makes a pleasant change as a way of portraying one of the worlds finest Rock Stars.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Happy Birthday Mick!</image:title>
<image:caption>Pete Townshend as the Statue of Liberty 1983 A long time ago, in a galaxy far from here, Mick Jagger celebrated his 40th birthday, and Pete Townshend wrote an OpEd in the Times to celebrate this monumental event. Unbeknownst to Pete, Jaan Wenner had purchased the piece for Rolling Stone and we were dispatched to take a suitable photo. Pete has always done anything we asked and it was decided that he should become the birthday card, and as the photo was for America the idea of imitating the Statue of Liberty came up. We gave him a candle to hold in one hand, and a copy of Robert Greenwood's book, "Up and Down with the Rolling Stones" was placed in his other hand. To complete the card, Starr wrote the message "Happy Birthday Mick" on Pete's chest with lipstick. By this time the light was going down quickly so we used fill in flash and took the photo in the garden of his house in the country. The result is a happy, and fun filled photo. Perfect for a birthday card from one mega Rock Star to another.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Nick Lowe LP Cover</image:title>
<image:caption>Nick Lowe - Clapham Common 1979 I seem to have known Nick Lowe for as long as I can remember, first coming across him in the early 70's when he was a member of Brinsley Schwarz, he then produced LP's by Elvis Costello and Dr Feelgood amongst many others. His first LP, Jesus of Cool was renamed Pure Pop for Now People in America by the powers that be, he followed that up with Labour of Lust whilst at the same time appearing in Rockpile, a band he had formed with Dave Edmunds in 1975. One time when we were at Top of the Pops I spied Andy Williams on the other side of the studio, Nick was wearing his famous Riddler Suit and we went over and ambushed Andy in order to get a photo of the two chaps together. The photo that appeared in the NME is legendary although Andy had absolutely no clue who we were. This photo was taken in the back of a small van, Elvis Costello had just played a gig for Rock against Racism at Clapham Common. Nick and I were wandering back to the tube station when the van pulled alongside, the back doors opened and we bundled in to a van already full to the brim with EC and the Attractions, it was used on the cover of his compilation album 16 All Time Lowes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Johnny the Lydon King</image:title>
<image:caption>John Lydon - London 1981 The first time I photographed Johnny Lydon in the studio he turned up with Keith Levine, this was Public Image time, he was complaining loudly and was uninterested in having his photograph taken, I struggled to get anything worthwhile from him, in fact I gave up after seven frames of the twelve frame roll, I unplugged the Strobes, but, just as he was about to get off the stool he turned profile and I quickly grabbed this frame using only the modeling bulbs as lighting. I then suggested we call it quits, I saw no point in wasting each others time. But in retrospect it's a really good photograph, and it sums up the anger and frustration burning up inside him. It also shows his refusal to compromise, and his hatred of the "Business of Music" which is how he described the relationship he had with his record company.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Nick Lowe goes Thrift Shopping</image:title>
<image:caption>Nick Lowe - Buffalo 1978For any British band touring America in the 70's the first thing you did after checking in to the Hotel/Motel was to hit up the Thrift Shops and Pawn Stores. Back then there were still gems to be had at both, and musicians rigorously checked them looking for guitars and other instruments, on this particular day Charles Shaar Murray found a Telecaster in great condition, in fact he lent it to Nick so that he could play Heart of the City in the encore at Elvis's show that night at the University. Thrift Shops, also known as Sally Ann's (Salvation Army) were great places to find cool stage clothing, and also winter coats, much needed as this trip occurred during the great Blizzard of '78. These were the days before Johnson and Johnson started being the place for Rock Star Threads, us chaps could not get enough cowboy shirts, leather jackets, cashmere coats and a whole lot more. The Thrift shop in this photo is in Buffalo, and the temperature was 15 below, but Nick Lowe is a hardy chap and never even bothered to wear a jacket over his legendary musical note sweater.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - A young Morrissey</image:title>
<image:caption>Morrissey - London 1982 I used to work a lot for Rolling Stone in the 80’s, I was the photographer they came to when they needed something done in Europe. Most of the time it was American bands I had never heard of, but sometimes it was British ones. So one Sunday afternoon in 1982 the Smiths showed up at the door of our little studio in a Bayswater Mews, to say they were young and inexperienced at photo shoots would be an understatement. They took direction well, but they had yet to really get their individual looks together and their clothes were pretty bad. Doing what we often did we gave then black turtle neck sweaters and decent jackets to wear, but the singer, clad in this terrible rayon smock refused to wear anything else. He seemed to only have one name too, that of Morrissey. Having done some reasonably decent group shots we turned our attention to the singer. He really had no clue as to what to do now he was on his own, it was kind of sad really, he was the front man yet he hardly had as much presence as a tin of cat food. For 30 years these photos of him remained unseen, but, on closer examination there were one or two frames where he looked pretty good. I would never have guessed that he would go on to become so successful, but you never can tell, success is a fickle thing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Madness being Madness</image:title>
<image:caption>Madness - Glasgow 1980 Because I worked for the Specials I knew the chaps in Madness from the Two Tone Tour, but I took few photos as they had their own favourite photographers and I did not want to intrude. Then they quit the Tour and were replaced by Dexy's Midnight Runners, another great band from that era, with a leader who had more passion than anyone I had ever met. When Madness subsequently went out in their own tour I was commissioned to photograph them. To be honest anyone could have done these guys, posing came naturally and they had a cohesion that made for great photos every time. But instead of the action packed photos they were used to doing I decided to simply take a photo of their heads, this picture was done in a couple of minutes backstage in Glasgow. Not long after this I ended up on a train to Oxford with them, I was just going to their show and had no cameras with me. I got talking to Suggs and Kennedy's assassination came up, he had little recollection of an event that causes everyone from my generation to remember exactly where they were when they heard the news. Then it dawned on me, Suggs was the first person I knew who was born in the 60's, not the 40's or the 50's. I realized that he was part of the next generation, and at the age of 27 I felt old for the very first time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Lemmy with Dynamite</image:title>
<image:caption>Lemmy - London 1984 I think I first came across Lemmy in 1971 when he was in Hawkwind, he was someone you often saw in Ladbroke Grove or at the Marquee and other watering holes around town, as he was best mates with Mick Farren he became a regular visitor to the NME offices in '75 and '76 before he formed Motörhead. In fact I reviewed Motörhead's first gig at the Marquee in 1977 for the NME and whilst I saw potential in the Uriah Heep/Black Sabbath area I would never have thought they would have been as successful as they became, let alone expect that they would still be going strong thirty five years later. Lemmy is a gruff, slightly imposing, yet adorable kind of a Rock Star, quite malleable too, always happy to oblige when one needs a quick photo for a Magazine. This picture was originally shot for the cover of Time Out in 1984 and the 'session' lasted about ten minutes. Lemmy arrived, took off his leather jacket, grabbed the fake dynamite and stepped into the studio grinning. He then did 24 assorted poses, giving me everything I needed on exactly two rolls of film. Knowing that all good photographers were skilled in the art of quick shoots, he put the dynamite down, put his leather jacket back on and left the building.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Iggy Pop</image:title>
<image:caption>Iggy Pop - Manchester 1977 When Iggy Pop released The Idiot in 1977 he did a British Tour featuring the album's producer, David Bowie, on keyboards. This meant that security was very tight, and photographers were not invited. This did not stop me going to the first show at Friars in Aylesbury. In an attempt to avoid the security personnel I ended up in the roof looking straight down at Bowie, but the lights were terrible and I knew I needed to try again. So Tony Parsons and I went to Manchester a couple of days later. This time security was even tighter and I was unable to get my cameras into the show. But the next night, in Birmingham, I strapped the lenses to my ankles and hid the cameras under my clothing, having seen the show twice I knew exactly when Iggy would throw a few shapes and decided to limit myself to those numbers. This time I did much better, I got quite a few good photos, including this one which pretty much sums up Iggy, having got what I needed I kept my cameras hidden for the rest of the show, I was not going to take a chance that I would get caught, and luckily I didn't.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Elvis at The El Mocambo</image:title>
<image:caption>Elvis Costello at The El Mocambo - Toronto 1978 My philosophy regarding live photography was simple, instead of wasting film, study the show on the first night, see where the best opportunities occur, then concentrate on getting the best photographs during those numbers the following night. Given that Elvis was playing the El Mocambo, a small club in Toronto,it meant using flash, and that meant taking as few pictures as possible. I saw that during Less than Zero and Watching the Detectives EC gave his most animated and manic performances. Not only that, he dropped to his knees in Detectives just after singing "she's painting her nails as they're dragging the lake" and my aim was true, it was to catch that particular moment. I waited patiently and caught him right on cue, I was mighty happy with myself, but his manager was not happy with me. Whilst accepting that Elvis did this every night Jake did not want the public to know, he wanted each audience to think it was spontaneous, so he told me quite bluntly that I could not use the photo. I reluctantly agreed, because I could see the logic behind this decision, it was strategic in nature and I respected that. Jake respected me for agreeing and from that day on gave me total access to EC whenever I needed it. So I waited thirty five years before making it available, to me it sums up those early years perfectly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Ian Dury at the Dentist</image:title>
<image:caption>Ian Dury at the Dentist 1978 Whilst others had problems with him, I always found Ian Dury to be fun to photograph and his enthusiasm made the job easy, no matter what else might have been happening he always switched into photo mode for me and we did some memorable shoots together. In 1978 the Stiff Tour had made Ian pretty successful, the first album had sold really well and his management set their sights on America. But before he went there, and paid for by the royalties from Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, he decided to get his teeth fixed. Like fellow Punks, Lydon and Strummer, Ian's teeth were in terrible condition and he underwent serious dental work. Due to the pressure of gigging he had this done in stages and the Dentist dealt with his lower jaw first, this involved putting a temporary bridge in place and while chatting to the Dentist Ian came up with a unique idea, just in time for his first trip to the Americas. He had a Union Jack painted on this bridge so that when he gave those septics (septic tank = yank) a big toothy grin they would see the flag of his beloved Britain. Hearing about this it seemed a natural thing to take photos of, and so I went down to Harley Street with my lights and set up in the Dentist's office. Ian sat in the chair and mugged away for the camera, it's one of my favourite sets of photos of him and the NME liked it enough to use it as a cover.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rock and Roll (a Blog) - Springsteen at Hammersmith</image:title>
<image:caption>Bruce Springsteen - Hammersmith Odeon - London 1975 In 1975 Bruce Springsteen was hailed as the savior of Rock and Roll by the CBS Hype machine in America and he came to London in November 1975 to play two shows at the Hammersmith Odeon. But, Bruce was a shy and sensitive artist and the hype bore heavily on his shoulders. There was a party after the show in the Balcony Bar and I knew that the only way for him to get there from Backstage was to walk around the side of the building. I waited near the front of the Theatre with some fans when he walked alone towards us, wearing the same wooly hat that he had performed in, he looked more like a homeless person than a Rock Star, he signed a couple of Autographs and then looked up at the big sign above the entrance. 'Finally London is Ready for Bruce Springsteen' it proclaimed. I took this photo exactly at the moment he was reading it. His mood changed immediately and he appeared agitated and upset, I took no further photos but watched as he ripped down a poster inside the Theatre before going upstairs and joining his party, after talking to a couple of the Record Company Executives he told his manager to instruct CBS to stop the hype and let the music sell itself. This is a very intimate moment in Rock history and I'm very lucky to have been in the right place and the right time to witness it.</image:caption>
